“Una” is Latin for “one.” Seemingly all alone, yet somewhere joined to the whole world — a small guide to the inhabitants of this world.
The heroine of this tale. When the rocket lifts off from a star sinking beneath the water, she crash-lands on a strange world and wakes all alone — then walks on and on, searching for her lost friends and the rocket. The kind who moves before she thinks. — "Una" means "one" in Latin: she seems to be all by herself, yet she is always joined to the whole world.
Una's companion on the journey, and the queen of the Ice Country. Clever, but timid. She wavers between saving herself and saving Una, and travels on — worrying, fearing, faltering, and little by little, changing. — Perhaps the true heroine of this story.
A little girl who loves riddles, met in the Forest Country; before long she joins the journey. Her strange eyes see straight through every illusion. — And her riddles always point, somehow, to a tomorrow that has not yet come.
A shrine maiden at the heart of a ring of animals, high on a mountaintop. She tells Una and the others what is to come, and where hidden powers lie — a being who can't help but receive voices from somewhere far away. — She speaks little, with a touch of irony, and is seldom understood by those around her.
Sisters who appear at the end of the story, within a swirl of butterflies. They stand at the border of life and quietly hold out a choice: to live again — or not. One with orange hair, one with white. — Standing exactly between body and soul. In Una World, the only two written in full capitals.
A horse that carries Una on its back and runs anywhere. A mysterious champion who appeared like a comet at the ice races. Wild-tempered, yet it saves Una and the others again and again. — A companion of few words. Its owner is Lord Banba. Its true name is Eclipse.
A great faceless creature met on a snowy mountain. With its huge body it rescues a kidnapped friend, and from then on it travels with them always. Its face is hidden in fluffy white fur, unseen. — It never, ever takes what isn't its own. A warm-hearted soul.
A legendary old perfumer who lives in the Country of Fragrance. With his wondrous art of scent he saves Una and the others, and joins the journey. Everyone simply calls him "the Nose." — With a single drop, he can quietly move a person's heart.
The veiled old man who stands at the very top of the Ice Country — the one at the center of the story's mystery. Stern, and somehow frightening. — Yet deep in his heart he holds a single prayer he can tell to no one.
